2020 NZ Speedgolf Open

2020 New Zealand Speedgolf Open

Getting to this event was a challenge in itself and after a plane breaking down in Canberra and my bags being lost for 14 hours in Sydney I eventually arrived at Whitford Park 2 hours after my tee time. Thankfully Phil from NZ golf, the organiser of the event, was happy to let me tee off later in the day giving me 45 minutes to get changed, warm up and tee off. I was happy just to be there with my gear and being able to still play however my head was not truly in the game.

Arrived in New Zealand!

Round 1 on Saturday I started with a triple bogey (7) on the first hole. I managed to scramble my way around the course for a decent score of 75 in 53 minutes. Placing me in 5th after day 1 with the best golf score but quite a slow running time compared to the leaders.

World #1 Jamie Reid was leading former 2 time world champion Rob Hogan by 1, it was going to be a great battle on day 2. We retired after the conclusion of round 1 to the comforts of the Clubhouse which combined a Bar with an outdoor BBQ area and a massive Pool. The Whitford Park GC makes for a great family day out where the kids can play in the pool while the parents relax after their round. The Caterers put on a great feed for us to all take on some much needed sustenance.

Having finally been able to have a good nights rest I woke up on day 2 full of confidence and I knew that if I stuck to my game plan of pacing myself and keeping my heart rate under control I would be able to make up a couple of places. I was however not confident that Reid and Hogan were catchable after their solid first rounds.

Having started with a Par on the first hole for my first par on that hole in 4 attempts thus far I had a feeling that today was going to be a good day, then making birdies on 2 and 3 and narrowly missing birdie on 5 I was on a roll. A few dropped shots mid-round and another birdie saw me finish with a strong golf score of 71 in just under 54 minutes. I gave a massive cheer as I crossed the finish line since I knew I had left nothing out there.

As the other competitors started coming in the general comment was that people were struggling with their golf out there on a hard and dry Whitford Park course.

The final standings showed only 2 seconds separating 3rd and 5th places. and I was somewhere in there. Luckily enough I shaved an extra couple of meters off the run with taking on a couple of doglegs and was able to sneak into 3rd place and take out the medal for the best Golf Score of the Tournament 75+71+146

Congratulations to Jamie and Nic on their placings and to all the competitors for finishing both rounds in some hot and humid conditions. Also Congrats to Jonathan Ricks my fellow Canberra Speedgolfer on placing 10th in his first Speedgolf Major, and to Colette Blacklock from NSW for placing 3rd in the Women's division.
